Wish for Wheels and Visible provide a ‘magical moment’ before the holidays

Highline Academy is a tuition-free, DPS Charter School with a custom whole-child curriculum focused on inclusive excellence and rigorous academics. In December of 2019, Wish for Wheels partnered with Visible to give 80 bikes and helmets to the students at Highline, 68% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch. We connected with Assistant Principal, Abby Arriaga to see what the gift of a bike meant to Highline students and their families.

What did you enjoy the most about the day your students received bikes from Wish for Wheels?
The look on our student’s faces when they came out a saw the bikes was magical! We managed to keep the bikes a secret up until that moment and it was amazing. We also really enjoyed that the volunteers put the kids on the bikes and let them ride around the school. There was so much joy that day.

What impact did this experience have on your school community?
I have noticed that more students are riding bikes to school, which means they are practicing healthy habits. I think a big impact was that our students received their bikes right before we went on Winter Break and for students who might not always get the presents that their other classmates did, it felt like a way for everyone to feel recognized and important.

What about the Wish for Wheels mission resonates with you?
Providing opportunities for students who may not otherwise have these opportunities is huge to me. I cannot express how thankful we are for the bikes and the impact that it had on our students.
